June Unemployment Rates Reflect Seasonal Changes Across the Upper Cumberland

June unemployment rates increased across much of the Upper Cumberland, mirroring a statewide seasonal trend driven largely by the annual summer break for school systems rather than broader economic weakness. According to the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development, county unemployment rates rose in 94 of Tennessee's 95 counties as many school employees, including bus drivers, cafeteria workers, and custodial staff, were temporarily out of work during the summer months.

Across the Upper Cumberland, the combined unemployment rate reached 3.8 percent in June. County rates ranged from 3.1 percent in Macon County to 5.6 percent in Pickett County, with Putnam County reporting 3.4 percent. While the monthly increase reflects expected seasonal patterns, most counties remained below the 5 percent mark, demonstrating the continued strength of the regional labor market.
