Upper Cumberland Unemployment Remains Below 6% Across All 14 Counties

The Upper Cumberland's labor market remained relatively steady in August, with all 14 counties reporting unemployment rates below 6% and nine counties recording rates below 4%.

According to August 2026 labor force estimates from the State of Tennessee, unemployment across the region ranged from 3.0% to 5.2%. Putnam County's unemployment rate held steady at 3.7%.

The numbers provide a snapshot of a regional workforce that continues to support employers across a wide range of industries. With unemployment remaining relatively low in much of the Upper Cumberland, connecting employers with available workers and helping individuals develop new skills remains an important part of workforce development.

Workforce Connections supports that work through services for both employers and job seekers. Business Services can help employers with recruitment, training and workforce development, while American Job Centers provide resources such as career guidance, resume assistance, job search support and connections to training opportunities.

The August numbers also come as employers across the region continue to add positions in industries ranging from healthcare and manufacturing to retail, hospitality and skilled trades. For employers looking to grow, having access to a prepared workforce can be an important part of turning new investment into lasting economic opportunity.

For job seekers, a changing labor market can create opportunities to build skills, explore new careers and connect with employers. Workforce Connections is available to help people across the Upper Cumberland take the next step in their careers.
